MIT just released a report last month that indicates 95% of all AI projects are failing. They're call it "The GenAI Divide".
Looking through a ton of other studies, polls, and other research, it's clear to me that the main drivers of failure are:
- Lack of a clear ROI justification
- Poor data quality & integration
- Failure of AI systems to adapt and learn over time
- Misaligned Expectations & Vendor Hype
- Neglect of Ethical & Operational Considerations
‼️- AI Fatigue
We see all kinds of data and articles related to most of this, but today, I want to highlight AI FATIGUE.
This is a real issue that I don't hear anyone talking about. And because nobody is thinking about it, it means that no matter how technically sound you are and no matter how many management frameworks you implement, you will still likely fall into the 95% failure category because you never realized you're driving cultural and organizational change with your AI initiative.
It really highlights the fact that being successful with AI is just as much about being successful with people as it is with technology - if not more.
AI Fatigue is a change management issue, which is not something I see anyone mentioning.
People don't resist change. They resist imposed change. Let's take a look at AI Fatigue by the numbers:
- Employees feel pressed for mandatory adoption of AI without proper support or rationale: 75% lack confidence in using AI, 40% can’t integrate AI into their workflow.
- Employees frequently using AI report 45% higher burnout rates than those who don’t.
- 35% of employees are already reporting to be experiencing severe stress, and 67% expect more AI-related change.
- A shared sense of project failure is contributing to AI/change fatigue. In fact, 50% of business leaders report declining company-wide enthusiasm for AI.
Being successful with AI is business imperative. The winners of the new competitive landscape are the ones who are successful with AI; getting out of the trap of endless experimentation by aligning solutions with actual business problems, effectively managing cultural and organizational change, and driving real ROI.
