Jump start the new year for your employees with the gift of working equipment! A client of mine was telling me that they spent 4 hours waiting for information needed to generate a report that the other department said was already available but was not accessible. This seems to be a direct result of a recent merger in the company. What a frustrating day for the employee to have to come in and out of the task for hours while waiting for others to problem solve the accessibility issue. It was also noted that this was the third week in a row with the same issue.
Technology issues happen. Bumps in the road happen when there is a merger. However, it is about how it is managed that impacts company culture. Below are some tips for leaders in this type of situation.
☑️ Check with the employee about their perspective of the issue.
☑️ Inform upper management of any delays that may occur as a result of this information transfer issue.
☑️ Direct available resources for resolution of the issue
☑️ Keep the employee well informed of the steps you are taking to resolve the issue.

12 hours. That is how long I spent sitting in the emergency room waiting area with my 82-year-old father yesterday. I was informed by the nursing staff that the main hospital was full therefore ER patients needing admission couldn't be admitted. This then caused a back-up resulting in a consistent stream of over 40 patients waiting all day in the emergency room for care. But I share this because of what else I noticed. The staff from nurses to techs and housekeeping to security were all pleasant in their demeanor with the patients and each other. They answered the same questions around the room over and over with compassion and empathy. This resulted in a waiting area where the patients, remained calm. I heard a few grumbles of frustration but everyone understood what was happening and most felt heard. I have heard some reports over the years of very difficult leaders in that hospital in other departments. However, it appeared yesterday that this department as understaffed and overwhelmed with things they could not change as they were, maintained a culture of care and compassion.
How would your staff have reacted? The medical community struggles as whole to practice what they preach with self-care and compassion toward others. I challenge those of you in the medical community to evaluate your staff during these types of moments. Then look at how you can grow in your leadership to create outcomes that show compassion to the patients as well as the staff.
