Davis PT: A Balanced Approach
🧠 Why Crawling is One of the Ultimate Brain Workouts! 🐾🎶
If you think crawling is just for babies, think again! In Occupational Therapy, complex crawling patterns are a powerhouse exercise for neurodevelopment and brain strengthening—especially for adolescents.
In this Reel, our awesome patient is tackling a highly advanced crawling sequence. Here is the science behind what he is working on:
Opposite Arm & Leg Coordination: Notice how he is advancing his opposite hand and knee at the exact same time? This is called reciprocal movement. It forces the left and right hemispheres of the brain to talk to each other rapidly across the corpus callosum (the brain's communication bridge). This builds stronger pathways for coordination, reading, and motor planning!
Moving to a Tempo: Matching his movements to a steady beat adds an extra layer of cognitive demand. It requires deep focus, rhythm, and internal timing.
The Forward-to-Reverse Challenge: You’ll notice him pause and struggle just a bit when shifting from crawling forward to crawling backward. And that is exactly what we want! 🎯
That moment of struggle is called a cognitive shift. His brain has to put on the brakes, change the motor plan, reverse the coordination pattern, and restart. Navigating that tricky transition is where the real brain building happens!
We love seeing our patients push through these challenges to build stronger bodies and sharper minds. Way to work! 💪🎉
