Georgia Democrats have spoken. will be on the ballot in November in the race for Georgia governor.

Bottoms entered the race with high name recognition, a major endorsement from former President Joe Biden, and a strategy focused heavily on community engagement across the state. Despite criticism surrounding her time leading Atlanta and her decision not to seek a second term as mayor before joining the Biden administration, she maintained a commanding lead throughout election night.

What may be most significant: she avoided a runoff altogether. Several Democrats were hoping to force this race into another round, but Bottoms secured the nomination outright, giving her months to focus solely on the general election while Republicans continue battling through a runoff of their own.

I traveled to Leipzig just outside of Berlin, with to visit MDR and get a firsthand look at how journalism works inside one of Germany’s major public broadcasters. Unlike here at home where the largest media outlets are commercially funded, the largest broadcasters in Germany are publically funded. It’s rooted in a move post WWII to protect independent journalism and combat government propaganda.

Different country, differnt history and a different media system… but some of the conversations happening in these newsrooms sound like what we talk about back home in Atlanta including trust in media, political pressure, and the future of local journalism.
