Zoo Atlanta

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Bird Team! They’re excited to announce, not one, not two, but three different species with hatchlings!

The first picture shows the two white-headed buffalo weaver chicks! These chicks can be found with their parents and older sister in the front aviary (across from owls). They are a huge success for the Provisional Species Survival Plan (SSP) within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The program has had limited hatchlings, let alone parent-reared chicks. This is the second successful clutch in two years that were parent-reared at Zoo Atlanta.

The second picture is two snowy-headed robin chat chicks! The chicks hatched in late May in the aviary next to the lappet-faced vulture habitat. Snowy-headed robin chats are also part of an AZA program, with every chick hatched being critical to the success of the zoological population. If you're patient, you can see them and their parents on your next visit!

The third photo is the first successful speckled pigeon chick of the breeding season in The Living Treehouse. Zoo Atlanta is one of only a few AZA accredited facilities to house and breed speckled pigeons. Two speckled pigeon pairs are also incubating eggs in The Living Treehouse, so they're not done yet!
