TUESDAY, JUNE 16 — GWINNETT, THIS IS A BIG ONE 🗳️

If you live in Senate District 7 (Duluth, Berkeley Lake, parts of Lawrenceville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, and Suwanee), your vote on Tuesday matters more than almost any election this year. Here’s why.

Gov. Kemp’s special session on redistricting starts Wednesday, June 17 — the very next day. Lawmakers will be redrawing Georgia’s political maps, and whoever wins Tuesday’s special election runoff will be seated in time to vote on it.

That seat was held by a Democratic woman, Nabilah Parkes, until she stepped down to run for Lt. Governor. Adrienne White Carden is the Democrat fighting to keep it blue — and to make sure Gwinnett has a voice in the room when those maps get drawn. Her opponent is a Republican who would hand the GOP another vote on redistricting and voting rights.

There’s a second race on the same ballot that can feel confusing but is just as important: the Democratic primary runoff to decide who represents this seat starting in 2027. That’s between Ruwa Romman and another Democrat — and Ruwa is the one who can keep a Democratic woman in this seat for the long term.

Yes, you can and should vote for BOTH Adrienne White Carden AND Ruwa Romman on Tuesday. They’re different races, different timelines, same goal: a Gwinnett Democratic woman fighting for our communities.

I was so honored to give the keynote speech at the graduation this past weekend. I was lucky to be able to spend a day at the Capitol with these impressive women earlier this year and was overjoyed to be able to welcome them to be my fellow alumnae. In my speech I talked about how the work is hard, because it was designed to be. American politics was created explicitly to exclude us from participating. But that is why we need women to step up and run, not despite the obstacles but because if them, because we need numbers large enough to change the system from within. No one is more qualified to take HD 68 than Timoria McQueen Saba. A nationally recognized maternal health expert and survivor, she’s already passed legislation in other legislative bodies, including co-authoring the Act to Reduce Inequities in Maternal Health in Massachusetts. She brings real expertise, lived experience, and proven legislative wins to a state with one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the country. Georgia’s General Assembly needs her. Bring it on, Demetria Henderson! Headed to a June 16 runoff for State House District 58, Demetria is a nonprofit founder, longtime District 58 resident, and survivor of a delayed-care medical emergency that became her reason to run. She’s fighting for accessible healthcare, affordable housing, strong schools, and reproductive justice. Her Term is boldly with her. Two more weeks, Atlanta.

Congratulations, ! Dr. Keisha Buchanan is the Democratic nominee for Henry County Commission District 3. A licensed psychotherapist and longtime advocate for mental health and disaster recovery, Keisha brings a healer’s perspective and a builder’s plan to local government. Her Term is boldly with her.
