Two employees with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office are facing criminal charges following separate investigations into alleged misconduct, according to the agency.
The sheriff’s office announced a short time ago that both employees were arrested today after investigations conducted by the agency’s Office of Professional Standards.
One employee, identified only as a certified deputy, was charged in connection with what the sheriff’s office described as “domestic related criminal actions.” The deputy faces charges of peeping tom and eavesdropping and remains on administrative leave pending due process.
The second employee, identified only as a detention deputy, was accused of using excessive force against an inmate inside the Rockdale County Jail. Authorities said the detention deputy, who was described as a probationary employee, was terminated and charged with aggravated assault, battery and violation of oath of office.
The sheriff’s office said both deputies are being housed at another detention facility.
The identities of the deputies were not released by the sheriff’s office. I did reach out to the agency requesting the names of both employees.
In a statement, Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett said misconduct by employees would not be tolerated.
“I want to be clear that when any of my staff are involved in any misconduct, whether it is violating the rights of an inmate or a violation of the law, they will be held accountable,” Levett said.
“I hold every one of my employees at a high level of accountability and their actions shall never tarnish the trust we have from the community we serve.”
Levett added that every allegation of misconduct involving sheriff’s office employees would be “investigated thoroughly, with transparency,” and that employees would be “arrested and charged accordingly.”
