Back in the 1970s, when I was living in New York City, my cousin was dating a policeman who used to take me along on his patrols through different parts of the city. I often saw groups of young people gathered around old, dilapidated buildings—standing in circles, wearing beads, ringing bells, and with their heads shaved. He told me they were members of a cult. I didn’t really understand much about it at the time, but they all looked surprisingly happy. He explained that many of them were runaways who had been brainwashed into staying with the group.

I thought I recognized one girl I knew and wondered whether she would have remembered me.

This song was written mostly around two chords. The middle eight was inspired by the 11th-chord rhythm voicings Jimi Hendrix used on the First Rays of the New Rising Sun LP, particularly on the song “Hey Baby.”
