Before the Royal Oak. Before the Nautilus. Gérald Genta designed the Rolex King Midas in 1962 — a solid 18k gold case shaped like a Greek temple, with a bracelet grooved to suggest the columns of the Parthenon.
Elvis Presley owned one. John Wayne wore one. And the watch never got the credit it deserved.
The integrated bracelet language Genta developed for the King Midas became the template for the two most important luxury sport watches ever made. The price hasn't caught up with that history yet.

The best fake Rolex watches today aren't the cheap knockoffs you spot immediately. They're "super clones" — high-quality counterfeits that fool buyers who have handled genuine Rolex watches before.
They fail on four things: dial printing under magnification, movement timing, case finishing, and cyclops magnification. These are also the four things most buyers never check.
After 25 years of authenticating pre-owned Rolex watches, here's exactly what we look at — including reference-specific tells for Submariner, Datejust, Daytona, and GMT-Master II, and the red flags to watch for when buying online.

Rolex doesn't call their watches Pepsi, Batman, or Hulk. Those names came from collectors who needed shorthand for specific configurations — and some stuck so hard that even Rolex dealers use them now.
Pepsi = red and blue GMT bezel. Batman = black and blue. Hulk = green dial AND green bezel (discontinued, prices up). Kermit = black dial, green bezel. Sprite = the newest one, 2022, left-handed crown.
Knowing the difference between a Hulk and a Kermit tells a seller exactly how much research you've done. It changes the conversation.

$5,000 is the actual entry point to the Rolex pre-owned market. Not a comfortable one — the actual floor for a watch worth owning.
You're not getting a Submariner or GMT at this price. But you are getting the same movement quality, same case construction, same bracelet engineering as watches that cost three times as much.
Oyster Perpetual from $4,500. Air-King from $4,500. Vintage Datejust 36 from $4,500. And honest answers about what's worth buying — and what's not — at this price.
