A Parent's Perspective: Sandy and James Tell Their Son's Story
TYTY was in a scary place over a year ago. We both thought he was doing well until he backed away from the Insight group, stopped believing in himself, and lying to others to convince them he was doing ok in his recovery. As parents we didn’t understand why he could not figure out his path to a drug free life. He was sent out of the group for a bit to figure out what he wanted for himself. To continue on a path of destruction or find love for himself and allowing others to love him. The breaking point was when we found a su***de note. We instantly took action, he was sent to a lock in facility. We came to realize he had a plan and a date to end his life. As parents we were absolutely devastated for him to come to a conclusion so permanent!
We kept asking ourselves doesn’t he see the good in him and how much others love him and why wasn’t it enough? Was his life that awful that he couldn’t handle it anymore? We realized we could no longer keep him safe from himself. That wasn’t anything different then when he was using drugs it just was a shorter path to what drugs can lead to. We had to let go and let God help us with this and help him find his own way. We didn’t realize the pain he actually was in and it was a God thing that we were able to find his note. The facility said he couldn’t be released to us because he was too unstable even though at this point he realized he wanted to be back with the insight group and reached out to others to see what he could he do in order to achieve this.
We were able to reach out to the Mustard Tree Foundation to get help. There is no way we could have done this without their help. We are forever grateful for the much needed help they provided to our family. He was able to go to Step 2 where he found love for others, and above all himself and his higher power. He returned from Step 2 a changed person, he had changed back to our son. He smiled, dropped to his knees for his higher power, he was able to finish high school, get a great job that allowed him to get his own apartment.
Since then he now has other kids that are recovering addicts live with him and he reaches out to so many people, whether they are new and struggling through their own addictions or strong within their own recovery. He continues to work the 12 steps to incorporate it into his daily life. This mom and dad couldn’t be more proud of the man he is today! We thank our higher power daily for blessing us with a drug addict son and insight for giving him the tools to succeed in life and Mustard Tree for allowing this all to happen!!! Thank you for saving our son!!
Above all we thank those that continue to support the Mustard Tree Foundation because they wouldn’t be able to reach out to so many in need without the love and support that the community provides.

I found Insight Enthusiastic Sobriety in Atlanta, GA, as the program that helped our son! He was 14 when he first got into drugs. We spent large sums of money in 3 other programs before we found the one that worked! Affordable and for us 7 years later he is sober and happy!
