Holy Week always brings with it a sacred tension we can’t avoid. It forces us to hold two truths together: grief and hope. At the beginning of Holy Week, I remember…

It was only one week ago that the crowds sang Hosanna (God save us) at Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, but later in the week those cheers would fall silent. And those same cheers would shout for His crucifixion. Celebration turns to accusation. Praise meets the weight of what it truly means to follow Jesus.

We journey with Jesus from the celebration of His arrival to the cries of His suffering. We trade palm branches for a cross. And in that exchange, we’re given the opportunity to sit with the tension of what it cost God to redeem us.

Holy Week doesn’t gloss over suffering, it forces us to reckon with it. It reminds us that hope isn’t shallow positivity; it’s shaped in the company of mourning. Hope is what allows us to stand at the foot of the cross and still believe that God is good.

So when we leave Palm Sunday, we don’t hold onto the cheers of the crowd, we empty ourselves to follow Jesus. Because the same Jesus who entered Jerusalem as King will also come into our lives as Savior, not through worldly power but through costly humility and love.
And that is the tension we live in…

We mourn what sin has brought to this world, while praying for what our Savior is going to do.

We know Sunday’s coming…but we don’t skip over Friday to get there.
