On average, doctors spend almost a quarter of their time dealing with insurance companies, advocating for patients whose carriers deny certain treatment coverage.

If a patient needs something that doesn’t appear on a company’s list of covered procedures, it’s (initially) denied, which often results in the doctor needing to consult with another (non-practicing) doctor on the insurance company’s payroll to appeal the decision.

The appeal requires medical records and relevant, published clinical trials are sent to the insurance company. Some of the time, such documentation results in an appeal, but it’s not typical.

What usually happens is that another appeal is required, and an outside reviewer (this time, a practicing doctor) is consulted.

If this appeal is denied, the patient may have to hire a lawyer.

As you can imagine, all of this takes time. A lot of it. And many patients don’t have the time or the money to fight this, so some ask for cheaper alternatives.
