Shepherd Center

When a group of Shepherd Center patients and therapists headed to a World Cup match, they weren't just going to watch soccer; they were putting months of hard work into practice.
For Andrew Cordeiro Ribeiro, a patient in the Spinal Cord Injury Day Program and a passionate Brazil fan whose parents are from Brazil, the experience was an opportunity to enjoy the excitement of the world's biggest game. For Marcie Mac, a client at SHARE Military Initiative, it was even more special — this was the first professional sporting event she had ever attended.
Alongside recreation therapists Taylor Johnson, CTRS, and Jacob Carenbauer, CTRS, plus four-legged fan favorite Sallie, both patients worked on navigating large crowds, managing overstimulation, advocating for their needs, and building confidence in a fast-paced environment.
At Shepherd Center, some of the most meaningful therapy happens beyond the gym walls. Experiences like these help patients reconnect with their communities, gain independence, and discover that life's biggest moments are still within reach.
