Today is a day to honor the brave men and women who fought and died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to commemorate those who lost their lives and was originally known as Decoration Day. After World War I, the observance evolved to honor American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s also important to recognize the contributions of Latinos who served in the U.S. military. Over 500,000 Latinos served in World War II alone, according to the National WW2 Museum.

Parades are held across the United States, and families also visit cemeteries and memorials to honor their loved ones. Let’s take today to remember and give thanks to the fallen heroes and their families.

Earlier this week, our Deputy Director, Elisa Covarrubias, led a Know Your Rights training in Fannin County, helping provide accessible information and resources to community members. A special thank you to Giovanni Diaz from Diaz & Gaeta Law, LLC for volunteering his time and supporting this effort.

Attendees were grateful to have an attorney there who could answer their specific questions, especially in an area with limited access to businesses or services. Training like this really helps to empower the Latino communities across Georgia.

Today is an important day for our communities across Georgia. Take time to make your voice heard by voting in the primaries so you can help decide which candidates will be on the November ballot.
