I remember standing there looking at two people I loved and who loved me. Both were telling me what they wanted me to do. Problem was, they wanted two totally different things.

I looked from one to the other thinking, “Y’all do realize somebody’s gonna be disappointed when I answer, right?” Nobody cared. No one said, “This isn’t fair to put you in this position.”
Neither stepped back to release the tension. They just stood there. Waiting. Pick me. Pick what I want. Pick my side. I walked away.
That thing blew all the way up!

Had I chosen one of them, I’d have been wrong with one person. By choosing nobody, I ended up being wrong with everybody.
I’ve thought about that moment a lot over the years. It was never about the decision. Life would’ve gone on either way. What stayed with me was knowing both were willing to do that. They knew I couldn’t make one happy without disappointing the other. They were fine standing there waiting for me pick.

I don’t live like that anymore.
Folks don’t get to hand me my choices. I don’t start with anybody’s expectations but my own standards. I start with Allah, and my values.

Shout out to all the following folks, in no particular order:

Don’t wear (fill in the blank)
Don’t talk like that.
Don’t get that license.
Don’t take that job.
Don’t move to that city. Don’t pray to that God, worship this one instead.
