We're excited to share about our event this Thursday, February 26! We’ll be hosting a Public Health Professional Development Workshop featuring a Q&A with Don Cornwell from the Pathways Center and Dr. Senait Kebede, a Global Health professor and leader in directed research.

After the Q&A, we’ll have time to work together on resumes 📝 interview prep 👩🏻‍💼 and other skills to help you become a strong candidate for future opportunities. Dinner will be provided! 🌮

"Riding the Tide of Waste" by James Burton, RSPH

This photograph captures a young Bajau child off the coast of Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia, playfully navigating the turquoise waters on a discarded styrofoam box — a fragment of the waste that has become part of their oceanic landscape. The Bajau, a sea-dwelling people whose livelihoods depend entirely on the ocean, are facing the mounting consequences of anthropogenic climate change and pollution. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and plastic contamination threaten both their food security and way of life. Every meal, every breath, every playtime moment ties them to the same waters now burdened with human debris. What appears as childhood joy conceals a stark reality: a community adapting to an environment transformed by global neglect. From a global health perspective, this image underscores the intersection of environmental degradation, nutrition, and human health. Contaminated marine ecosystems lead to bioaccumulation of toxins in food sources, respiratory and dermatologic issues, and long-term displacement risks. “Riding the Tide of Waste” is a visual reminder that the health of our oceans is inseparable from the health of the people who depend on them.
