In October 2017, Brazilian police uncovered a 600 meter tunnel built underneath São Paulo, complete with electrical wiring, ventilation, and rail tracks designed to cart out cash. It led straight toward the vault of a Banco do Brasil branch holding 1 billion reais, roughly $317 million. The gang had spent $1.27 million building it over four months. Police had been monitoring them for three months but the tunnel was already complete by the time they found it. The suspects were hours from drilling into the vault when officers moved in and arrested 16 people, including a woman who had rented the house under a false name and several bulletproof getaway cars.
