The Day Ocoee Was Wiped Off the Map

On Election Day, November 2, 1920, a Black farmer named Mose Norman attempted to vote in Ocoee, Florida. At the time, Black citizens were legally entitled to vote under the 15th Amendment, but white officials routinely used intimidation and violence to stop them.

Norman was turned away at the polls. Later that day, he returned with the support of July Perry, a respected Black landowner and community leader. Rumors quickly spread that Black residents were planning an uprising.

That night, hundreds of armed white men from Ocoee and neighboring towns descended on the Black community.

They burned at least 25 homes and two churches, shot residents as they fled, and forced entire families to escape into nearby swamps and forests. Historians estimate that dozens of Black people were killed, with many estimates reaching up to 80 victims, though the exact death toll remains unknown because many bodies were never officially documented.

July Perry defended himself and his home during the attack, killing two members of the mob. He was arrested, but never received a trial.

Instead, a white mob broke into the jail, dragged Perry through the streets, beat him, shot him repeatedly, and lynched him from a telephone pole. His body was left hanging as a warning to every Black resident in the area.

The massacre effectively erased Ocoee's Black community. Survivors fled, abandoning their homes, farms, and businesses. For roughly the next 60 years, Ocoee remained an all-white town.

Despite the scale of the violence, no one was arrested or prosecuted for the massacre.

Today, historians recognize the Ocoee Massacre as one of the deadliest acts of racial violence in U.S. history and one of the largest single-day assaults on Black voting rights in America.
