On Monday I celebrated the 28th birthday of my son.
I reflected on his birth and the many ways it changed my life.

I'm grateful that my OBGYN was a compassionate and personable doctor.
I'm grateful that my wishes to have a natural birth were honored.
I'm grateful that my desire to nurse him was honored.
I'm grateful for a successful and healthy birthing experience.

I know this isn't always the outcome for Black women who are going through the birthing process.

Doctors, respect your Black female patients, especially during pregnancy. Listen to them. When they express concerns, don't dismiss them.

Black women deserve healthy and happy birthing experiences.

I'm grateful that mine was and that both baby and I are here today 28 years later to celebrate.
