Presencia

At the whiteboard, a volunteer named Tim helped a fourteen-year-old work through scientific notation. Over by the patio door, Yoselin sat next to one of our new middle-school students and walked him through units of measurement. In the play room, Joselyn helped one of our youngest students recognize patterns.

This healthy activity is the result of two major changes at Presencia. The first came as a result of our work with a strategic planner earlier this year. After assessing all our activity, revisiting our values, and talking through what we do best, we reoriented around creating and cultivating relationships that equip our students to thrive.

On the heels of this clarification, Katie Garduño, a psychology student who grew up in Presencia, accepted our invitation to take the position of Program Director, and she has been working with our team to redesign our programs around meaningful relational interventions.

It’s working. More children of immigrants in our neighborhood are signing up for our programs and getting the personal supports they need to thrive, in and out of school. Students whose attendance was dropping off have re-engaged. We’re all working harder and having more fun.

This summer, in a season when we typically slow our programming, our work is taking off!

We celebrated our students at a community potluck and award ceremony. Thank you to all those who joined us! We felt the community love.
