HBCU Library Alliance

Juneteenth has deep significance to our nation’s HBCUs.

In the aftermath of slavery, Black Americans faced a nation determined to deny them full citizenship and opportunity.

Amid displacement, threats of violence, and uncertainty, they built schools, they pursued the education that had been denied them.

Between 1865 and 1880, dozens of HBCUs were founded because Black communities understood that learning was more than knowledge—it was liberation.

Today, the HBCU Library Alliance honors that legacy by preserving the histories, scholarship, and achievements of those who transformed struggle into institution-building and hope into action.

HBCU libraries are more than repositories of knowledge; they are guardians of a people’s journey toward freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

Alabama A&M University today announced that it is the recipient of a $1.2 million endowment from the John Stallworth Foundation to provide tuition assistance for academically gifted students. The Stallworth Foundation, established in 1980 by John and his wife, Flo, provides merit-based scholarships to deserving students attending their alma mater. Scholarship recipients, to be known as Stallworth Scholars, must meet the required funding criteria and will be recognized yearly at the AAMU Honor’s Convocation.
