How to prepare for your IEP Meetings:
First, What is an IEP? An IEP addresses your child’s unique abilities and needs and describe how he/she will access the general curriculum. If your child receives special education and related services, it is required that he/she have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities.
Here’s Tips on how to prepare:
✏️ Ask Questions!- Write down any unanswered questions and concerns prior to the meeting to make sure all questions are addressed.
✏️ Communicate appropriately- Allow each staff member the ability to express themselves in a respectful manner.
✏️ Conduct the meeting in a respectful and empathic way- You may here somethings that might not sit well with you and that’s okay! As long as each party is being respectful and aware of boundaries. It’s all about the solutions…
✏️Create Solutions- Issues will arise! That’s a fact! However it’s about finding solutions and common grounds in order to help the student. What you see, your teacher may not be aware of vice versa. Teachers and staff need to be more empathic and less judgement when communicating and finding solutions that benefit the student. Without affective communication, there will be a lot of disconnect.
