Five years after legalizing adult cannabis possession, Virginia is officially creating a legal retail marketplace.
New legislation will allow recreational cannabis sales to adults 21+ beginning July 1, 2027, with the state preparing to license up to 350 retail stores statewide. Applications for retail licenses are expected to open February 1.
The law also increases the personal possession limit from 1 ounce to 2 ounces while continuing to allow limited home cultivation.
Supporters say establishing a regulated market can help shift consumers away from the illicit market by improving product testing, labeling, accessibility, and consumer protections. State projections estimate the program could generate approximately $51 million in revenue during its first year through cannabis-related tax collections.
As more states continue shaping cannabis policy, Virginia becomes another example of how legalization conversations are evolving beyond possession and into market structure, public safety, and economic opportunity.

🌿 Gov. Brian Kemp signed the "Putting Georgia's Patients First Act" into law.

The new law replaces the state's "low THC oil" with "medical cannabis," increases THC and possession amounts, allows adults 21+ to vaporize, and expands the list of qualifying conditions.
