I was fifty-eight, a widower, working nights at a lumber yard in North Carolina, when my daughter Kimberly handed me two newborn boys in the hospital parking lot.

"I can't, Dad. I won't."

"Kim — get back in the room —"

"Two boys? At twenty-one? My whole life is over before it starts. Somebody has to want them. Maybe you do."

She got into her boyfriend's Camaro. He didn't look at me once. They drove off before the automatic doors closed behind us.

I stood there in the September heat with two five-pound babies in a plastic carrier and forty-two dollars in my wallet.

Wyatt was the loud one. Silas barely made a sound. The social worker told me I could sign them over that night and no one would judge me. I was sixty in three months. I had a bad back and a mortgage I hadn't finished paying on a single-wide.

I said, "They're mine."

Then, two weeks before their nineteenth birthday, a package arrived on the porch.

A gold watch for Wyatt. No card.

The next week, a leather jacket for Silas. No card.

Then a laptop. Then a check to the community college for a full semester's tuition.

I finally asked the boys at dinner, half-joking, "Which one of you robbed a bank?"

Wyatt put his fork down.

Silas wouldn't look at me.

"Grandpa," Wyatt said quietly, "we need to tell you something."
