Thirty-eight Athens Academy seniors have been recognized by the College Board for their performance on their Advanced Placement exams, representing nearly 50% of the Class of 2027. In addition, 86% of Athens Academy students scored 3 or higher on this year’s AP exams, with 65% earning either a 4 or 5.
"These numbers are impressive, especially the percentage of students earning 4s and 5s and the number of AP Scholars with Distinction,” commented Head of School Jeff Miles. “Having 24 students recognized at the highest AP Scholar level speaks volumes about the caliber of our students and the strength of the academic experience at Athens Academy."

Athens Academy is proud to announce that faculty member Lori Neves has been named Georgia's Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year for 2026 by the National Association of Biology Teachers.
The Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA) is presented annually to exceptional biology educators in each state. Sponsored by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), the award recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching biology and life science, foster strong relationships with students, and contribute positively to their schools and communities.
Ms. Neves joined the Athens Academy Upper School faculty in 2017. She holds a bachelor's degree from Furman University and a master's degree from the University of Georgia. During her tenure at Athens Academy, she has taught ninth grade Biology, AP Biology, and Evolutionary Genetics Honors. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she serves as a student advisor and a Capstone mentor, and she oversees the school's National Honor Society chapter.
“This honor is a testament to Ms. Neves as an exceptional science educator,” according to Science Department Chair Anna Scott. “It also reflects something larger about Athens Academy. For decades, our school has invested in excellent science teaching, encouraged professional growth, and celebrated the work of teachers who make a lasting difference in students’ lives. I am so proud to see that tradition continue.”
OBTA recipients are selected based on their teaching ability and experience, contributions to their schools and communities, and the quality of their student-teacher relationships. Candidates must have at least three years of teaching experience, with a significant portion of their careers devoted to biology or life science education. Current Athens Academy Science Department Chair Anna Scott was awarded the OBTA in 2010, and former Department Chair Richard Patterson won the award in 1998 and 2008.
Congratulations, Ms. Neves!
