Update: we found a kind volunteer to take this sweet boy and a kitten to the vet today💙

This sweet boy was found after making his way to our back gate, desperately seeking help. Around his neck was a cord tied so tightly that it has cut deeply into his skin approximately an inch deep. We don’t know how long he suffered like this, but we do know one thing:

He needs emergency veterinary care immediately.

At the same time, we also have a kitten that needs to be seen by the veterinarian today.

Unfortunately, we are facing a staffing shortage. We only have one staff member at the shelter right now, and they cannot leave because they are caring for the animals and maintaining the shelter.

We are asking our community for help.

We urgently need a trusted volunteer who can donate a few hours of their time within the next 1–2 hours to transport these animals to the veterinary clinic. You will be in direct contact with the Shelter Manager throughout the process and will receive instructions every step of the way regarding treatment and next steps. 

This isn’t just a ride to the vet.

It’s a chance to give two innocent animals the medical care they desperately need.

This dog has already endured more pain than any animal ever should. He came to us because he had nowhere else to go. Please help us make sure he doesn’t have to wait any longer.

Due to current staffing shortages, effective immediately, Athens Animal Services will be open to the public from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday.

Our normal business hours are 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but the temporary adjustment will allow our staff to take a much-needed lunch break while ensuring we can continue providing the best possible care for the animals in our shelter.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Once we are fully staffed again, we look forward to returning to our regular hours of 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

It’s been an incredibly busy week here at Athens Animal Services. We’ve taken in over 30 animals this week alone! While that’s a lot of new faces to care for, we’re excited to share some great news.

We’ve been invited to participate in a huge adoption event in Fort Worth on August 15th & 16th, and our goal is to take every single dog and cat in our shelter that is already spayed or neutered. This is an amazing opportunity to help our animals find loving forever homes, but we need your help to make it happen!

Here’s what we’re looking for:
🐾 Transport kennels (all sizes) to safely transport our animals to and from Fort Worth
🩵Small fleece blankets to help keep them comfortable
🦴 Dog toys to keep our pups happy and occupied while they wait to meet potential adopters

If you have any of these items you’d like to donate, please drop them off at the shelter during our business hours. Every donation, big or small, helps give these animals the best chance at finding a family.
