After a week of rain, Sally and Roscoe celebrated the return of sunshine the old-fashioned way. Well, old-fashioned for Siberian Huskies.

It's been a hot and dry spring in Asheville, so we're thankful for a rainy long weekend. Just a few days ago, this creek was little more than a trickle, but look at it now.

We are forever grateful on this Memorial Day for all those who gave everything for freedom so that we may enjoy the simple beauty of a walk on a rainy day. Thank you.

For a few seconds, I thought my study had been invaded by a never-before-seen flying insect. I wondered if it might sting, bite, or otherwise maim me.

Then I remembered I had removed a picture from the wall. Left the hook for a replacement. A hook between two lamps casting shadows.

Safe for another day.

For the last few days, Asheville has been unseasonably hot. In the heat, our afternoon walk gets shortened by a mile or so (the morning three-miler still happens).

Ah, but we've been promised a break today. Roscoe and Sally seem to be suggesting we need to make up for lost time. Or maybe they want an extra meal as compensation.

Or both. Tough negotiators.
