The Appleton Housing Authority recently commemorated a significant achievement as three exceptional women graduated from the Family Self-Sufficiency Program, successfully transitioning to financial autonomy and embarking on a new phase of their lives.
Meet Miss Janay, Miss Angela, and Miss Iliana, three determined single mothers exemplifying resilience.
The Family Self-Sufficiency Program is designed to empower individuals and families by fostering stability, enhancing earnings, and ultimately transitioning beyond reliance on public assistance.
Through goal-oriented strategies, financial literacy, professional growth, and supportive services, participants work towards achieving long-term independence.
Through perseverance, and commitment to their objectives, their accumulated savings account exceeded $40,000, providing a substantial financial foundation for their futures.
Even more significant than the financial milestone is the representation of each woman's transition to complete financial independence, no longer reliant on public assistance.
Their accomplishments reflect five years of dedication to improving their lives, providing stability for their families, and building brighter futures.
Graduations like this underscore the importance of the Family Self-Sufficiency Program, which transcends mere savings accounts or program completion to focus on empowerment, opportunity, and transformation.
We take great pride in these graduates and are honored to have been part of their journey. We are grateful to those who came to support these women and hear their story.
The FSS program is open to families participating in the Housing Choice Voucher Program who are motivated to achieve independence from all subsidies.
The AHA's Family Support Specialist, Nicole Fenske, works closely with families to establish achievable educational and job training goals.

The Appleton Housing Authority (AHA) would like to take time to remember and honor the life of Amanda Tennyson (Mandie), a remarkable soul whose journey touched hearts, changed lives, and lit a path for many battling addiction or simply navigating the trials of life.
Mandie was a part of the AHA family for five years living in one of our affordable homes. We first met Mandie when she was vulnerable but ready to navigate a brighter future. Mandie could now plan instead of living in constant survival mode. Mandie found her way back to the top during this time and we were so proud of her hard work.
Through her own experiences or the compassionate support she offered to those who needed it—Mandie taught us that healing is possible, that hope is stronger than shame, and that we all carry the power to rise, rebuild, and reach back for others along the way.
Mandie touched our lives in a significant way and as such was selected for our documentary. With an open heart and unwavering honesty, Mandie shared her story in our documentary, not to gain sympathy but to spark strength in others.
Her legacy wasn’t limited to overcoming adversity. Mandie inspired people from every walk of life to show up with more kindness, to listen more deeply, to judge less, and to love harder. She reminded us that our scars are not shameful—they’re proof that we’ve fought, grown, and endured.
The Appleton Housing Authority believed in Mandie, in second chances, in people, and in the beauty of becoming. We continue to offer unwavering support and compassion to our clients.
Mandie’s impact will continue in every life she touched, and every soul she helped believe in something better. Today, we don’t just mourn—we celebrate. We celebrate a life that proved light can break through even the darkest corners. Your light lives on in us.
Our heartfelt condolences to her family and all who loved her
