It's Opening Day! Today, Wednesday January 14th, me and my colleagues convene in Annapolis to pass state laws. This is the "Legislative Session" and it lasts for 90 days. The dome of our state capitol is beautiful, isn't it? Maryland has the oldest, continuously operating state capitol in the country. I and my fellow state lawmakers will focus this Session on Affordability - like energy, health insurance and housing costs - as well as protecting Marylanders from harmful federal policies. Follow me on social, and feel free to email me with your questions and concerns at [email protected]

My Bill, HB1440, to Support Mothers and Caregivers, unanimously passed the Senate. Now, it goes to Governor Wes Moore to be signed into law!

A few months ago, my constituent Rachel Wagner came to me with a severe issue: Maryland’s courts lacked the necessary accommodations for breastfeeding mothers, forcing them to navigate jury duty and courthouse visits without access to private lactation spaces or necessary childcare considerations.

We took action. HB1440 ensures that circuit courthouses across the state provide private lactation rooms, giving breastfeeding mothers a dignified and comfortable space when they need it. Additionally, the bill allows breastfeeding mothers and caregivers of children under four to be excused from jury duty, recognizing the challenges of balancing childcare with the demands of court service.

No one should be forced to sit through jury duty while worrying about where they can pump or whether they have adequate childcare. This bill is a commonsense step toward making Maryland’s courthouses more accessible and family-friendly.

I look forward to standing with Governor Moore as he signs this vital bill into law!
