Emergency legislation I sponsored to ensure retirees with state pensions receive the correct Cost of Living Adjustment was among the first bills signed into law today by Governor Wes Moore.

HB 1138 became necessary when the Bureau of Labor Statistics did not publish a Consumer Price Index value last October due to the federal government shutdown.

My bill lays out a specific formula for determining the missing October data point, which will be applied beginning July 1.

Many thanks to Governor Moore, Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk and Senate President Bill Ferguson for making this legislation a priority. And to Anne Gawthrop from the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System for her dedication to our state retirees.
