The Rotary Club of Rockville, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Greenbelt and the Rotary Club of Gaithersburg, proudly presents the Rotary Club of Rockville, Maryland Peace Concert — a celebration of unity, understanding, and peace.

Through the universal languages of music, spoken words, dance, and collaborative performances, this special event will highlight Rotary International’s mission to foster peace and goodwill in our communities and beyond.

Promote peace through Rotary’s global network
Inspire connections through artistic expressions
Celebrate diversity and collaborations
Create shared spaces for reflections, hopes, and peace

Excerpts from the January 1, 2003 message of Pope John Paul II for the celebration of the World Day of Peace include “…A greater awareness of universal human rights would greatly benefit the cause of peace…” This statement aligns with the 2 main themes of The Peace and Human Rights Gathering – Peace, and Human Rights.

The Peace and Human Rights Gathering’s main aim is to enlighten participants about peace and peace processes, to inspire them to be agents of peace, and to inspire them to be promoters of human rights.

Peace is possible. Every individual has a role to play towards personal peace, and world peace. Peace can begin with a peace attitude, and peace can begin with us. If everyone or almost everyone teaches, learns, and practices peace, peace will not only be possible but will be tremendously achieved.

Human Rights are rights that persons are entitled to because they are human beings.

The education, promotion, protection, respect, and enforcement of human rights are some of the strategies for peace. Peaceful societies make development possible. The event also aims to be beneficial to participants by providing more insight into Human Rights advocacy, and to ensure that laws, policies, regulations, and directives are in accordance with fundamental human rights.
There are various strategies for peace. Peace through education is one of the strategies. Human rights, peace, and education are connected.

We need solutions and actions for the problems encountered by humanity and the planet, through a combination of factors, for instance knowledge, economy, policy framework, advocacies, sustainable partnerships for development, sustainability, and so on.
As we advocate the respect and promotion of human rights, we need to advocate peace education, peace actions, and peace sustainability.

My name is Ukpeme Akpan Okon. I am the President of the Rotary Club of Rockville, in the State of Maryland, in the United States of America.

Welcome to Rotary Year 2025-2026! The Theme of Rotary Year 2025-2026 under the leadership of Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo is “Unite for Good”.

Rotary International, founded by Paul Harris, is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary Clubs exist in many countries.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test of Rotary has long served as an ethical guide for members to live by in their personal and professional relationships.

OF THE THINGS WE THINK, SAY OR DO:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
