George Shirley Vocal Competition

Within GSVC the vocal competitors are within many of the divisions. However we, also have a dedicated division for the composers of which the pieces sung by the vocalist are created. Every year these composers continue to provide our judges with amazing pieces, that touch their hearts and soul. 

These pieces bring out the best in everyone. Let's continue to support these great artists.

We are about halfway through the competition and our composers division is well under way. This sounds like a good time to highlight another great composer chosen by our competitors. We are now looking at Undine Eliza Anna Smith Moore. (Photo credit https://www.musicbyblackcomposers.org/)

Undine Eliza Anna Smith Moore (25 August 1904 – 6 February 1989), the "Dean of Black Women Composers", was an American composer and professor of music in the twentieth century. Moore was originally trained as a classical pianist, but developed a compositional output of mostly vocal music—her preferred genre. Much of her work was inspired by black spirituals and folk music. Join us for the GSVC welcome concert, with two world premiere compositions by Joshua Mthembu and Maria Thompson Corely and previous GSVC winners, sopranos Sloane O’Neill, and Amber Rogers, and pianists Sarah Thune, Muse Ye, and John Morefield will be featured.
