What is a direct cost versus an indirect cost in a project cost estimate?

Direct costs are any labor, subcontractor, or material dollars that directly contribute to the permanent installation of the project. An example of direct costs might be the discipline craft labor to install a process module with electrical and piping interconnects. Materials could be the structural steel, piping, or electrical cable that are permanently installed on the project. All these would be considered a direct cost to the project since the expenses occur at the project site during construction and the work and materials used in construction stay on site after construction.

Indirect costs are any labor or material dollars that support the project but do not directly contribute to the permanent installation of the project. An example of indirect costs may include items such as contractor staff, temporary facilities (power, water, etc.), snow removal, equipment, scaffold, and any other contractor labor needed on the project that does not actually remain as part of the permanent installation. Some material examples may include dunnage, material for temporary supports, erosion prevention products and cabling, or piping for temporary facilities. Other indirect cost items could include crew airfare, lodging, car rental(s), security fencing, barricades, or signage.
