Alaska Nurses

Every nurse has a different story about what brought them into healthcare. For Sara Beth, it started with a love of science and has grown into a career that’s taken her from the emergency department in Anchorage to volunteer work alongside healthcare professionals in Honduras. Today, we’re proud to share her story.

Sara Beth always loved science growing up, but it was her mother’s encouragement that led her to nursing. “She saw that nursing offered flexibility and so many different opportunities,” Sara Beth shared. “I also loved the idea that it could allow me to travel and experience healthcare in different parts of the world.”

Working in the emergency department means every shift is different. “People don’t always realize how quickly we have to switch between completely different situations,” Sara Beth explained. “You can go from caring for something routine to helping with a life-threatening emergency in just a few minutes.”

One of the most meaningful experiences in Sara Beth’s career has been volunteering internationally with MEDICO, an organization that partners with communities in Honduras. Working alongside local healthcare professionals has shown her that nursing reaches far beyond the bedside.

“Nursing has opened doors I never imagined. There are opportunities to learn from others, teach what you know, and make a difference in communities around the world.”

Outside of work, Sara Beth enjoys hiking, skiing, cooking, and spending time outdoors. She says Alaska’s strong sense of community is one of the reasons she loves living here.

That same sense of community exists inside the emergency department.

“It’s a team sport. We rely on each other every day, and I love being part of a team that’s working together to care for patients.”

Being part of the Alaska Nurses Association is another extension of that teamwork. “It’s a community that’s looking out for nurses, which ultimately means looking out for patients too.”
