Iron is one of the easiest things for a teen girl to run low on — and most families never realize it's happening. As she grows fast and starts her period, her body needs more iron than it used to. But everyday meals often don't keep up, so her levels slowly drop. The first sign is usually just being tired a lot, which is easy to chalk up to a busy week.😴
The research backs this up. A 2023 national health survey (NHANES) found that nearly 1 in 4 US girls ages 12 to 21 are low on iron and most never find out.
But here's the part that matters most: iron is not a supplement to start on your own. The only way to know if she actually needs it is a blood test, and iron should be added only when a doctor confirms it and tells you how much. Too much iron is genuinely harmful it builds up in the body, can upset the stomach, and at high levels is dangerous, especially for kids. More is not better with iron.
So the right order is simple. Watch how she's feeling. Test first. Then follow your doctor's guidance not the label, not a trend.👩⚕️
This isn't about worrying. It's about knowing what her body actually needs.
Real nutrition. Real teen needs.
