To help you seek God as you fast today, take a look at this devotional by Kari Pel:

John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

In today’s reading, we continue listening to Jesus’ last words with His disciples just before He was arrested and crucified. Chapters 13 through 17 of John record Jesus’ last conversation with His disciples and His beautiful prayer just prior to His arrest.

As you read through John 15, try to imagine the scene. Jesus and His disciples have just observed Passover together, and now they are making their way to Gethsemane. As they walk along, Jesus points to a vine. He may have even held the fruitful vine in His hand as He describes how the branches can only produce fruit when they are connected to the vine. Perhaps he tore a branch off and threw it to the ground to illustrate that a branch disconnected from the vine can no longer produce fruit; it can do nothing.

Jesus uses a beautiful word to describe this connection: abide. To abide means to remain, to sojourn, to continue to be present. Jesus knew that in a short while He was no longer going to be walking the earth with His disciples physically. But that didn’t mean the relationship would be over. Just as a branch must stay connected to the vine to live, so His disciples must continue to abide with Jesus- to abide in His love, to abide in His teaching, to not go searching for other vines because Jesus is the only true vine.

As you fast and pray today, take the time to abide- to be present with Jesus. Thank Him for abiding in You. Thank Him for the fruit He has already produced in your life. And thank Him for the fruit yet to come, as you continue to abide and walk with Him. As a church family, let’s commit together to abide in Jesus, knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Our reading for the day comes from John 6:1-21. In the first part of these verses we read about the feeding of the five thousand where Jesus miraculously feeds crowds of people who had followed him out into the hills after seeing the many signs that he was performing.

Now, Jesus could have simply performed this miracle without any aid from his disciples, but that is not what he does. Jesus loves to include us in the things that he is doing. So, he asks them where they can pick up some food for the people. They are incredulous over Jesus’ question. They don’t have the resources to buy food for so many people. All they had was a sack lunch from some kid that was with them. Jesus takes their meager rations and somehow feeds thousands of people.

Today Jesus is interested in demonstrating his power through his people. Yes, Jesus could win our cities without us, but he has chosen to use the church to minister to those who are lost and hurting. Like the disciples, we frequently make excuses about the mission that Jesus has called us to: we don’t have enough money, we don’t have enough gifting, we don’t have enough people, etc. But Jesus does not need much to do something extraordinary.

Today as you fast, consider what resources you have that could be used for the sake of God’s kingdom. Pray that God would use you and what little you have to do something amazing for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
