Artist statement
This image, “in which new life builds on the past,” is from my MFA thesis “The Desert Unicorn,” a photographic survey of my childhood home in New Mexico. My work focuses on memory keeping and landscapes, and I hadn’t returned to the state since my maternal grandmother’s death in 2017. Thanks to a research grant I was able to travel across the state with my 4x5 field camera documenting iconic and prosaic scenes, which were then made into a suite of archival pigment prints on Japanese washi and kitakata paper.

Artist statement
This is a digital collage made up of hundreds of layers, put together in Photoshop. It is somewhat seamless but skewed and distorted. The place is one of importance to me, of a place within the town my parents lived in for many years. After printing, another layer is added, a handwritten narrative about the place, family story and history, musings about the future, my children and grandchildren. The handwriting is only legible in parts but creates another layer of texture and meaning to the place depicted.
