We celebrate the life of Dr. Richard Handy, an accomplished engineer, entrepreneur, leader, and mentor to many in our department, who passed away on January 31, 2026.

Handy had a 60-year career as a professor at Iowa State, with over 100 academic publications, four books published, 20 patents, and more than 60 graduate students graduating under his mentorship. His legacy reaches beyond the many technical advancements he brought to geotechnical engineering, leaving lasting impacts on the students and professionals he interacted with in humor, kindness, and ingenuity.
