Here’s 1 of our 15 “ponds” on our farms. The ponds are built in draws and ravines as “erosion control structures”, helping to keep our soils on the farm. We pipe out the ponds so that cattle tanks placed below the ponds are filled by gravity. Recycling rainwater this way allows us to pump zero water or to use any rural water for our cattle operation. Dual purpose, right? Oh yeah, then about 20 years ago we stocked some of the ponds with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill for recreational fishing. Triple purpose ponds! And on March 26, I tested to see if the crappie were biting. Yes, they were - and the bass too! What a blast!

A special Thank You to Brian and Mindy Oswald (High Point Bulls) for hosting Brett & Olivia and Linda & me at their September 8 customer appreciation event. We enjoyed some awesome slow smoked prime rib with all the fixin’s and a great Blues Band entertained us all evening. What a great time! A special congratulations on their new “Certified Angus Beef” endorsement and barn branding. Quite an honor for them! We’ve been buying bulls from High Point for 10 years, and our own herd continues to improve because of their high quality genetics. Great people and great bulls!

Happy May Beef Month! Congratulations to this year’s winner of Iowa’s Best Burger Contest. The third year in a row for the winner’s burger to be a “smash burger”. If you haven’t already done so, you gotta try ‘em. Thanks to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council for drawing attention to this great product.
