⚾️ HUGE NCAA UPDATE FOR COLLEGE BASEBALL (AND ALL D-I SPORTS)! ⚾️
Hey everyone! The NCAA just dropped a massive rule change that is completely rewriting how player eligibility works. If you’ve been trying to keep up with the transfer portal chaos, medical redshirts, and endless waivers, the D-I Council just tried to stream-line everything.
Here is the quick, easy breakdown of what’s changing, what it means for our sport, and the drama that’s still unfolding. 👇
🚨 The Big Change: "5 Seasons in 5 Years"
For decades, the rule was "5 years to play 4 seasons" (allowing for a redshirt year). That is officially dead.
The New Rule: Athletes now get 5 seasons of competition over a 5-year period.
When the Clock Starts: The 5-year clock starts either when a player enrolls full-time OR the academic year after their 19th birthday—whichever comes first.
When it Starts: This takes effect this fall!

❌ Say Goodbye to Medical Redshirts
This is probably the biggest shockwave for college baseball, where Tommy John surgery and arm injuries constantly sideline pitchers for a year.
No More Injury Waivers: The NCAA is basically eliminating eligibility extensions for injuries.
The Only Exceptions: The only things that will pause a player's clock now are religious missions, maternity leave, or active-duty military service.
Hard Deadline: For current players seeking hardship waivers under the old rules, schools must submit them by July 31. After that, the window slams shut.

🗓️ Who Does This Apply To?
The rollout has a bit of a transition phase:
Incoming Freshmen & Current Players: Anyone enrolled right now with eligibility left after this 2025-26 year (and the incoming freshman class this fall) can choose to use this new age-based model OR stick to the old rules.
Future Classes: The rule fully and strictly applies to all athletes enrolling in 2027-28 and beyond.
⚖️ The Legal Drama Isn't Over
The NCAA wants this to be "black and white" to stop the endless wave of lawsuits from players trying to extend their careers to make more NIL money. But sports lawyers are skeptical.
The Employee Loophole: Because college athletes aren't legally considered employees yet and don't have a union to agree on these rules, players can still sue.
Diego Pavia Lawsuit: The Vanderbilt QB is still taking the NCAA to trial in February over how junior college years count against D-I time.

💬 What do we think, group?
Is this a great move to clean up the roster chaos, or is it completely unfair to guys who suffer major injuries and lose a season?
