Hybrid seeds, chemical fertilizers, herbicides and irrigation systems changed farming during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Farmers produced more with fewer workers as technology and equipment continued to improve.

“You know, farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower said that in 1956, during a period when agriculture was rapidly changing across the country.
His administration expanded the Interstate Highway System and signed the Soil Bank Act as farms grew larger and production increased.
