CarFax and the auction have done it to me AGAIN.

I ran a CarFax report on a vehicle the DAY OF THE AUCTION. The report clearly showed accident damage, but there was NO total loss branding reported. Based on the information available, I made my buying decision.

Then, the very next day AFTER the vehicle was sold, the CarFax was updated and suddenly the vehicle was reported as a TOTAL LOSS.

This raises a very serious question:

If the insurance company had already determined the vehicle was a total loss, why wasn’t that information available to buyers BEFORE the auction ended?

A total loss designation can significantly impact a vehicle’s value and bidding activity. A vehicle with accident damage only will often bring more money than the same vehicle labeled as a total loss. When critical information appears only after the auction is complete, it calls the integrity and transparency of the process into question.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this happen, and I doubt I’m the only one.

If you’re buying damaged vehicles or repairable cars at auction, do your homework and keep copies of every CarFax report you pull before bidding. You may be surprised at what changes after the sale is completed.
