When a landscape contract goes sideways, the easy place to point is the field. The crew missed a step. The PM didn't communicate. The account manager dropped the ball.
After thirty years of watching this play out, I can tell you: it's almost never the people.
It's the handoff.
Every landscape contract passes through six stages between the day it's sold and the day it's renewed:
Lead ➡️ Design ➡️ Estimate ➡️ Sold ➡️ Work-in-Progress ➡️ Close-Out.
Six stages. Five handoffs. And the gap between "sold" and "work-in-progress" is where most landscape companies quietly bleed margin, trust, and renewals.
⚠️ It's the gap where scopes don't reach the crew on time.
⚠️ Where site plans arrive late.
⚠️ Where gate codes don't get passed on.
⚠️ Where labor budgets get assumed instead of confirmed.
The crew didn't fail the client. The handoff did.
We've been teaching a six-stage discipline to landscape owners for thirty years. We call it Start Clean, Finish Clean.
The premise is simple. Implementing it inside a working business is the work of years.
✅ Day 3 of Envision 2026 on June 25 is dedicated to unpacking the whole thing — and showing how Mulhall's uses it to keep client trust strong and stay ahead of churn.
If you've ever watched a job go sideways and known it wasn't really the crew's fault, this is the room for you.
