I recently saw a post (on another page) discussing the merits of aiding someone being attacked. Most people's answers were driven by a moral imperative, but one of the things that many people didn't consider was the true legal ramifications of doing so.

Back when I use to teach fi****ms courses, two of which were focused on use of deadly force in self-defense, I was required (by the NRA) to have a law professional teach the portion of the course that dealt with the legalities and ramifications of using deadly force. My takeaways from those sessions were:

In order to use "deadly force", you have to be willing to:
1) Go broke defending yourself in proving your innocence/level of liability
2) Loose your gun rights forever
3) Go to jail for the rest of your life

If you can't answer "yes" to each of those questions, then it shouldn't be an option/action...meaning, that the altercation isn't worth engaging in to begin with, and especially NOT the use of deadly force. Now...replace "firearm" with any other method of self-defense that could result in bodily harm, permanent disability, and/or result in death. Those same questions apply, and should be the deciding factors that dictate your action or inaction.
