The adductor pollicis is a deep muscle in the palm of your hand, between your thumb, index & middle finger. It’s the muscle that creates the fleshy web space between your thumb & index finger.

This muscle has a big job! It helps you bring your thumb toward your palm, pinch & grip objects, open jars, hold your phone, write, type & use everyday tools. Nearly every time you use your thumb, this muscle is working.

When it gets tight you may notice: tenderness in the web space between your thumb and index finger, hand fatigue, thumb stiffness, aching after texting, typing or gripping objects, and decreased comfort when pinching or opening containers.

This muscle works overtime and can be aggravated by scrolling & texting, long hours on the computer, knitting, crocheting, or crafting, gaming and repetitive gripping with tools or equipment. Even everyday activities can add up over time.

Ways to care for your hands that can help are to stretch your thumb and fingers throughout the day, take breaks from repetitive tasks, strengthen your hands with gentle grip exercises, and massage the muscles of your hand and forearm. Small breaks can make a big difference!

Nope 🪄 it’s not an incantation from Harry Potter..

The QL, quadratus lomborum, sits deep in your low back on either side of your spine. It connects your ribs to your pelvis, helping support your core & spine.

Your QL helps you bend side to side, stabilize your spine, support posture, and assist with breathing. It’s working constantly, especially when standing, walking or sitting.

When it gets tight you might feel deep achy low back pain, tightness on one side more than the other, discomfort when standing or walking, pain when bending or getting up from a chair. It’s often that “one sided” low back tension.

The QL can get overworked from sitting for long periods, carrying weight on one side (bags, kids), poor sleeping positions & overuse or compensation from weak core/glutes.

Some ways to keep your QL happy are gentle side stretches, strengthening your core & glutes, switching sides when carrying things & taking movement breaks throughout the day.

Massage therapy can help release the QL, reduce discomfort & improve how your body moves.
