Powershare & Gateway
PowerShare (or similar vehicle-to-home technologies) lets an electric vehicle (EV) send power back out from its battery to power devices, other vehicles, or a home — essentially turning your EV into a mobile energy source, not just a load. This concept is more broadly known as bidirectional charging, vehicle-to-home (V2H) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G).
🔋 What “PowerShare” Means
PowerShare is Tesla’s name for its built-in bidirectional charging technology that allows compatible vehicles (like the Tesla Cybertruck) to:
✅ Power your home during an outage or when you want to draw power from your EV battery instead of the grid (V2H).
✅ Power tools, appliances, and even other EVs directly from the vehicle’s outlets.
✅ Act as a backup power system when paired with the right hardware.
This turns the EV’s large battery (for example ~100+ kWh) into usable energy storage — very much like a portable generator or a home battery system.
⚡ How It Works
To use an EV to power a home, you need bidirectional charging capability, which requires:
A bidirectional-capable EV — not all EVs support this yet; Tesla Cybertruck and some newer models from other brands do.
Bidirectional EVSE (charging hardware) — specialized chargers that support power flow both to and from the vehicle.
A home connection with safe switching — so your home can switch from grid power to the EV safely (islanding controller, transfer switch, gateway, etc.).
Installation — typically by a certified electrician due to safety and building code requirements.
Once set up, your EV can automatically supply power when needed (e.g., after a blackout), and you can even monitor/control this through apps in some systems.
🏠 Typical Use Cases
🔌 Home Backup Power
During a grid outage, the EV can power lights, refrigerators, HVAC systems, etc.
Depending on battery size and home energy use, it can last for a few hours to days.
🧰 Power Tools and Appliances
You can run tools at work sites or appliances directly off the vehicle’s outlets or adapters.
🚗 Power Other EVs
Some setups can even charge another EV using the first EV’s battery.
⚠️ Current Limitations
Not all EVs support bidirectional charging. Only specific models do today.
Special hardware and installation are required — including specific chargers and safety disconnects.
Utility approval or electrical upgrades may be necessary in some areas for safe grid interaction.
🔍 Are There Non-Tesla PowerShare Options?
Yes — other companies and automakers are working on similar bidirectional charging systems (sometimes called V2H or V2G), like residential bidirectional chargers and kit solutions that let you power a home from various EV brands.
