Although was designated a federal holiday only a few years ago, many people have been celebrating for decades or more. Some have traditions passed down through generations, and some are just learning what the holiday commemorates. We asked community members of various ages and backgrounds how they celebrate Juneteenth, and what it means to them.

Submissions to the Library Cat 2026 and Duncan Dog 2026 contests will be accepted from June 29-July 17, and voting will take place online and in person from July 27-August 3. 🐾

We’re looking for your pets' best glamour shots, silly pics and . 📸 Plus, we want to hear the stories that make your beloved cats and dogs remarkable. We are a library, after all. 📚
