The marks Desertification and Drought Day, a serious and growing concern worldwide. This year’s focus is on rangelands and their impact on food security, water cycles, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Rangelands include grasslands, savannahs, deserts, and shrublands and cover more than half of the Earth.

The UN’s 2026 campaign focuses on the Three Rs.
Recognize—Rangeland resources help sustain over 2 billion people and provide important economic and environmental benefits.
Respect—Indigenous People and pastoralists (shepherds of sheep, cattle, and other animals) use traditional knowledge to protect the land.
Restore—Investments in sustainable farming and water management will slow rangeland degradation.

Protecting the rangelands and the people who sustain them benefits all of us.
