Mammary Cancer in Dogs and Cats: What Every Pet Owner Should Know 10/14/2025

Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day alongside that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Even though this day is typically recognized for humans, this is something your pets can get as well.

Cats and dogs have two chains of mammary glands running along the abdomen. Dogs typically have 8-10 glands (4-5 on each side) with smaller breed dogs tending to have fewer glands than larger breeds. Cats have 8 glands (four on each side). Occasionally a dog or cat may have an extra gland(s). The glands are connected to each other, and lymph nodes drain the region. Mammary tissue has a rich blood supply.

Both benign and malignant tumors can affect one or multiple glands. In dogs, roughly 50% of mammary tumors are malignant but in cats, ~85-90% are malignant. Cat mammary tumors are aggressive, and most tumors have spread (metastasized) at the time of diagnosis.

According to published statistics, mammary cancer accounts for 42% of all tumors diagnosed in dogs (more on this later) with a reported lifetime risk of 23-34% for an unspayed, female dog. Interestingly, almost all mammary tumors found in male dogs (rare but possible) are malignant.

Good Morning! Today we're going to talk about the importance of spaying and neutering. Although there have been recent studies indicating Orthopedic issues with early spay and neuter in certain breeds of dogs, typically those breeds have a predisposition to these issues. By having your pet spayed or neutered, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted animals. What's more, you could be setting your pet up for a longer life, as studies have repeatedly shown that spayed or neutered dogs and cats live longer, on average, than other dogs and cats. This advantage is likely due to the health and behavioral benefits of the procedures.

Today is National Fire Pup Day!
On October 1st, National Fire Pup Day honors the brave canines who have served—and continue to serve—alongside our firefighters. From the iconic spotted Dalmatian running beside a horse-drawn engine to the highly trained nose of a modern arson dog, these four-legged heroes hold a special place in the firehouse and in our hearts.

Louise aka "Wheezy" is a retired Accelerant Detection Canine (ADC) who served with Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) alongside her handler, Lt. Ron Gunderson. You can see this new sign recognizing her accomplishments at Vista Del Norte Dog Park!
