Karen is a vibrant fifth-grade teacher who brings energy and enthusiasm to her classroom, inspiring her students in math, science, and Spanish. Known for her love of learning and playful spirit, she can often be found playing ball with her students. Outside of school, Karen is a devoted wife, a loving mother to her daughter, and an active member of her community.
Karen was admitted to the hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain. Doctors discovered a large obstruction caused by a sigmoid tumor, and she underwent surgery. Following the procedure, she was transferred to the intensive care unit at the acute hospital, where she required ventilator support and faced several medical complications.
When Karen arrived at Kindred Hospital Albuquerque, she needed respiratory rehabilitation, wound care, and physical therapy to help her regain strength and independence. With determination, a positive outlook, and the support of her interdisciplinary care team, Karen began making steady and meaningful progress.
Her perseverance never wavered. Each day, she worked hard toward new milestones, celebrating every small victory along the way. Today, Karen continues her recovery and looks forward to returning to the classroom, ready to inspire her students once again with her resilience and love for life.
Reflecting on her journey, Karen shared, “When I first woke up, I heard the doctors say they hadn’t expected me to make it. But somehow, I’m still here — stronger than ever. I’m going to keep getting better and keep moving forward.”
